Les Bourgs Hospice was founded for the people of Guernsey in 1990 by Lisa and Greville Mitchell who recognised the need for a home-from-home which could provide the highest levels of compassionate and professional care to patients suffering from life-limiting illnesses, as well as their loved ones. All Bailiwick residents are able to come to the hospice for residential, respite and day care and there is no charge.

The property is currently undergoing substantial redevelopment and expansion to create a purpose-built hospice, which will be light and airy, large enough to meet the island’s needs, installed with the latest medical equipment and facilities and that has none of the accessibility and privacy issues that the original house had. The fund raising target for the new development is £4 million and this is on top of the thousands of pounds required to keep the hospice going every year.

The hospice is independent and relies entirely on public support. This comes in the form of fundraising and donations as well as through the outstanding work of the small army of dedicated volunteers who give their time and their skills to keep the house running.

There are volunteering roles to suit people of all ages and from all walks of life, and for those who have plenty or very little time to spare. Every volunteer brings a wealth of knowledge and experience that enriches the life of Les Bourgs and our volunteers tell us that being a part of the hospice enhances their lives too.
