We are yet again inspired by the amazing challenges people choose to undertake to support Les Bourgs Hospice and this one from Ben is no exception. We are so incredibly grateful to Ben and wish him all the best with his challenge and thank him for all his efforts. Ben says: "This year my father passed away peacefully at Les Bourgs Hospice after a long illness. I hope that I might be able to raise some funds to help ensure other islanders enjoy the same level of care and comfort in the future.
I began training to run an ultra-marathon in August last year, hoping to raise money for a local charity and regain my fitness after my PGCE training. There have been many ups and downs along the way. I was married in October which was also the last time my father left the house by choice. That same year I started work with Les Beaucamps High School, moved home twice and helped my mother as best I could as my father's condition worsened. Yet I was able to manage, to grow stronger, lose 37 lb and take 4 inches off my waist line.
An ultra-marathon is any event longer than 26.2 miles. Such races are not just longer but often take place in wild paces from desert sands to mountain snows. The Race Across Scoltand is no exception it follows Southern Upland Way from Portpatrick to Cockburnspath. While normally this is a 212 mile route the race organisers thoughtfully added a couple of extra miles. There is a 100 hour cut off, but I hope to finish the race in under 80 hours.
Such races are more about guts than brawn and I only hope that I can manage a tiny fraction of the strength of character that my father showed both in his final days and throughout his life "
