For the past five years, Laura Le Flocq and Val Le Page, sisters-in-law, have been volunteering their time as Supper Volunteers at Les Bourgs Hospice.

Their journey into volunteering began after experiencing the exceptional care that the hospice provided to their brother, sister-in-law, and close friends. Wanting to give back to the hospice that meant so much to them, they both decided to step up and offer their help.

Every Other Wednesday, Making a Difference

Every fortnight, on Wednesday evenings, Laura and Val visit the hospice. Their time there is spent preparing light suppers and offering companionship to patients, their families, and staff. They share a special bond with the hospice nurses, whom they describe as truly extraordinary.

Upon arrival, they follow the necessary hygiene protocols and review the supper forms, ensuring they have all the dietary information for each patient. Then, they carefully check the fridges, freezers, and pantry, taking note of all available food options to offer to patients.

Personalised Care and Support

Next comes the most rewarding part: visiting the patients. Laura and Val introduce themselves, offering a warm smile and encouragement to patients, ensuring that everyone feels comfortable and cared for. If family members are present and staying for extended periods, they ensure they have something to eat as well. They also remind families that tea, coffee, water, and biscuits are always available in the relatives' lounge.

For patients who may not want a full meal, they make sure there are alternative options, like their "famous" smoothies or simple, comforting treats such as ice cream and jelly.

Building Connections and Spreading Joy

One of the most cherished aspects of their role is the connection they build with patients and their families. Sharing a laugh, engaging in conversation, or simply being a listening ear adds a personal touch to their volunteer work.

The Final Touch

Before leaving, Laura and Val ensure the kitchen is spotless, cleaning everything and leaving it ready for the next volunteer shift.
