Christmas and Grief

At Les Bourgs Hospice, we understand that Christmas can be a challenging time when someone you love has died. Whether it is a recent bereavement or long ago it can be a difficult lead up to the day. Remember at this time you are not alone. We are here for you and if you would like to meet up with a member of our bereavement support team to talk please email us on bereavementsupport@lesbourgs.com or ring us on 251111.
We hope you find the following advice useful to help you navigate your grief this Christmas time. Please remember we all grieve differently, there is no right or wrong way to grieve. Be kind to yourself and look after yourself with self-love and compassion during this festive period.
- It is ok to be OK, and ok NOT to be OK.
- Continue old traditions or maybe try some new traditions.
- Feel free to say NO. It is ok to decline invites.
- Keep things flexible. For example, see how you feel day by day before you commit to something.
- Nurturing yourself, enjoying yourself and having fun is ok.
- Talk to family and friends about how you are all feeling.
- Alternatively, if it is too hard to talk as a family you could all write down on a piece of paper an emotion you are feeling and share together.
- Try to be sensitive to everyone’s different needs. We all grieve in different ways.
- Treasure memories you have of your loved one at this time of year.
- Wrap up warm and spend time in nature.
- Journal- sometimes it can help us writing down our thoughts and feelings.
- Continue your bond by doing something in memory of your loved one.
- Attend our Light up a Life Service this Sunday 8th December at 4pm. If you are not able to attend, you could light a candle at home instead and take a quiet moment to think of your loved one. Light Up a Life 2024 | Les Bourgs Hospice
- It can be a lonely time of year so you could reach out to voluntary organisations who will be looking for volunteers to help this Christmas. These may be some useful links; charity.org.gg/Volunteer/, www.guernseywelfare.com, www.salvationarmy.org.uk/guernsey
www.caritas.org.gg.
- If it is too hard you can ignore Christmas altogether.
- Most importantly do what feel right for YOU.
We are thinking of you all. Sending love, light and peace from everyone at Les Bourgs Hospice.
